About

The Summer Program includes activities such as Stop-Motion Camp, STEM projects, Cooking Around the World, various sports camps, arts and crafts projects, group games and sports, team-building activities, and themed special events like Olympic Day, Carnival Day, and a Summer Kickoff. Each week, staff offer themed activities, specialty camps, and field trips focused on exploring each child’s personal story, where they have been, and where they want to go. Staff and contracted enrichment providers host week-long specialty camps at no additional charge, and the Club provides a free, healthy afternoon snack each day.

Every staff member completes CPR and first aid training and certification before working with youth. All Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga employees are mandated reporters and complete mandated reporting training from Napa County officials. Club staff receive training in supervision, behavior, and discipline techniques. The organization states that it is committed to the highest standards of safety and integrity and maintains a zero tolerance policy for behavior that harms a child. Clubhouses are described as physically and emotionally safe places for children and teens under the guidance of caring, trained, and trustworthy staff. Club staff and volunteers are never alone with kids and follow a policy that always positions two staff in sight of each other and children at all times. Club staff do not transport Club members in their personal vehicles. Each Club has emergency protocols and procedures for situations including earthquakes, fires, active shooters, and missing children. Safety Committees are Board-led, meet quarterly, and conduct site tours throughout the year, and the Club completes annual safety assessments, audits, and inspections.

The Summer Program is part of an organization with 6 years of service to the community. The mission statement is: “We work every day to create a safe, fun environment where kids can pursue academic success, good character, and a healthy lifestyle – all under the guidance of caring, trained, trustworthy adult leaders.” The leadership and safety oversight team includes Nick Haley, Director of Operations; Trent Yaconelli, Executive Director; Tom Garrett, Chair and BGCSHC Board Member; Marianna Hawkins, BGCSHC Board Member; Christine Clark, BGCSHC Board Member; Pam Ingalls, BGCSHC Board Member; Matt McCaffrey, Chief of Police Calistoga; and Julia Matison, SHRM-CP, Safety Analyst-Pacific Region, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The organization holds a CANDID Platinum Seal of Transparency 2025. It partners with St. Helena Fire and Police Departments, Calistoga Fire and Police Departments, the St. Helena School District Emergency Team, Napa County Public Health, and Mentis Napa. One teen from the Calistoga Teen Center states, “The staff and friends make the club a safe and welcoming place where I can be myself,” and a 4th grade member says, “It’s more than a Club, it’s my second home.”
