Lumen Learning Center

Lumen Learning Center offers classroom style tutoring, private one on one tutoring, small group classes, and one on one instruction in subjects such as Math, English, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Calculus, Science, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and STEM programs. The program also provides ESL (English as a Second Language for all ages), learning Japanese classes, SAT or ACT test preparation with an initial diagnostic test and multiple practice tests, homework help, reading comprehension, writing skills, grammar, essay writing, vocabulary, spelling, and special programs for summer school. Students can receive tutoring in most subjects taught in grades K–12, with options for homeschooling classes, remote tutoring for grades K–12 using free online conference software like Skype or Zoom, and a choice between sessions at the center or in their home.

Professional teachers with years of experience provide personalized instruction, and experienced tutors are individually matched with students. The founder and executive director, Louise Schie, has experience in Montessori teaching and has served as an Elementary Curriculum Director, with a background in child development and child psychology. Lumen Learning Center is founded on the belief that students learn most effectively when the learning environment is inviting and the work is interesting. The center is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School and provides homeschooling classes and support for homeschooled students, including an environment to maximize their learning success.

One parent from Saratoga reported that a 5th grader working on writing and reading showed a large improvement in writing and a big growth in comprehension over six months, including a DRA increase of 6 points, and described the staff as loving, supportive, and professional. Another parent from Los Altos shared that Louise identified a 5th grader’s learning style in writing, leading to improved grades and confidence, and that a 3rd grader began to enjoy multiplication and division after two math tutoring sessions with a tutor named Melissa. A parent from Sunnyvale described Ms. Louise as a fantastic teacher who is easy to talk to and said their child made significant and immediate strides in reading and phonics with a customized approach for each child.
