About
Step Up Tutoring offers one-on-one online tutoring, mentorship, and academic coaching for students. The program pairs each student with a consistent tutor for twice-weekly online tutoring sessions. Step Up Tutoring also provides tutor training and ongoing coaching for tutors.
• Ages: 7–12 years old
• Schedule: Students are paired with a consistent tutor for one-on-one, twice weekly, online tutoring sessions
• Price: Students and families gain access to consistent academic support and meaningful mentorship at no cost.
Step Up Tutoring’s mission is to mobilize a national network of tutors to provide free, one-on-one online tutoring and mentorship to 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities. Tutors are trained volunteers and Federal Work-Study college students who are vetted, selected, and background checked. Tutor training is co-developed with ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator, and volunteers and Federal Work-Study college students receive ongoing coaching. Tutors use adaptive, AI-powered learning software and follow a research-backed curriculum in either math or reading tailored to students’ needs, using a hybrid human-tech model that includes AI-powered tutor feedback tools and adaptive learning technology personalized to each student’s needs.
Since their founding in 2020, Step Up Tutoring has supported more than 8,300 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities. The organization partners with over 40 districts and charter networks across Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York City, DC, and Arizona, and recruits community volunteers through service organizations. They are involved with INNOVATE SCHOOLS, contributing to efforts that improve schools across LAUSD.
The leadership team includes Sam Olivieri (Chief Executive Officer), Annie Johansen (Director of Learning Innovation), Camille Velasco (Family Coordinator), Charmaine Ho (Senior Director, Recruiting & Onboarding), Dani De La Cruz (Family Experience Coordinator), Daniel Halper (Co-Founder, Head of Step Up Labs), Erin King (Senior Manager, Tutor Recruitment), Felicia Ann Tacto (Onboarding Program Manager), and Gabriella Schneider (Development Director and Chief of Staff).
