Beach Cities Volleyball has been serving the South Bay since 2000, with the club starting in 2000 after Tony Mayrie, Don Shaw, and Chip Schulte began at tryouts in October 1999. The organization is led by Chip Schulte, Founder and President of Beach Cities Volleyball since 2000. The mission statement of Beach Cities Volleyball is to “Teach life skills and volleyball skills from 8 to 18,” with priorities to have fun, teach volleyball skills, and act as a positive role model. Head coaches have years of experience and resumes that include former professional players, college players, current college coaches, high school coaches, CIF Champion Coaches, and CIF Coach of the Year Award Winners.
The Future Stars Program is for boys and girls ages 8–18 and is a beginner level volleyball program that focuses on teaching and developing each athlete’s volleyball fundamentals, encouraging confidence, and having a lot of fun. Future Stars runs in 6-week long sessions all year, held one day per week at the Palos Verdes location and 1–2 days per week at the Torrance location, with advanced programming at the Torrance location for players with some volleyball experience looking to improve skills for school and/or club teams. The program emphasizes skill development, how these skills contribute to playing volleyball well, and the importance of working within a team structure, with development and habitual use of effective volleyball skills in competitive situations as a central focus. Beach Cities Volleyball builds beginning, intermediate, and advanced teams at every age level and does not solely focus on its top or strongest teams, but works to focus on every player and highlight every team in the club.
Beach Cities Volleyball offers training and programming to help athletes grow mentally, physically, and emotionally, and coaching is described within the program as a passion rather than a job. The club makes efforts to train players on Smack teams to be able to compete at the collegiate level and provides help with the recruiting process, including video recording, team and individual analysis through statistics in practice and games, contacting college coaches, and helping to get players signed up for showcases and travel opportunities. Beach Cities Volleyball athletes and coaching staff cross community, income level, and ethnic lines. Beach Cities Volleyball is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) California Corporation and has been recognized with “2025 Best Kids Camp,” and has been voted Best of the Beach Youth Sports Organization in 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022, as well as Best of the Westside Youth Sports Organization in 2024, 2023, 2021, 2019, and 2018.
