Grandma's House – A Vision of Hope is led by founder Flora Johnson, a retired teacher and elementary school principal. The program is in its sixteenth year. The mission of Grandma’s House is to provide a high-quality preschool that supports the needs of parents and provides an academic program where every child can reach their highest potential, inspiring them to become lifelong learners from preschool to college and beyond. Grandma’s House is a 501(c) non-profit tutoring program for at-risk students and is not state or federally funded, relying on fundraisers and donations from the community. The preschool has been recognized as a Five Stars Program by the Tulare County Early Stars Program and has been recognized by the California State Assembly, the Fresno African American Museum with a Trailblazers Award, and the City of Tulare for service provided for children and the community. The program is financed by fundraisers and donations from the community, with community partners that include Foodlink of Tulare County, Tulare Family Dentistry, Tulare County Pediatrics, and Altura Health Centers. The program organized a team of volunteers from various professions, including retired teachers and others who wanted to give back to the community, and is based on the proverb “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,” emphasizing the community working together. The program is open all year round and provides direct instruction to children who need additional support to be successful academically.
