The Greater Vallejo Recreation District was established on July 14, 1944. Its mission is to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles by providing safe parks and innovative and fun recreation programs for all residents. Vallejo City Unified Expanded Learning Programs connected with GVRD are funded by the After School Education and Safety grant and the Expanded Learning Opportunity funding from the California Department of Education, and these grants provide enrichment, physical activity, academic support and nutritious meals for youth in grades TK–8th at no cost to families. The GVRD Kid’s Club programs provide meaningful learning opportunities that promote lifelong skills for youth in grades TK–8th, and through the Kid’s Club STEAM Wheel, students are encouraged to explore, learn and grow. The Mobile Recess program is a mobile recreation program that brings free, high-quality sports, games, enrichment and art activities directly into neighborhood parks and communities, is designed to reduce barriers such as cost and transportation, and creates a fun, safe, and inclusive space where youth and families can play, explore, and connect in their own neighborhoods. POWER PLAY SPORTS CAMP includes Week 1 soccer with dribbling, passing, shooting, teamwork, and mini-games, and Week 2 basketball with dribbling, defense, shooting, layups, and skills challenges, and campers stay active with drills, games, and friendly competition while building confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Chess Wizards within the program offers challenging chess lessons, fun group activities, and tournaments, and teaches basics to new players while offering new ways for experienced players to show creativity on the chess board. GVRD offers programs that benefit over 120,000 Vallejo residents of all ages each year, manages 407 acres of public park space including neighborhood, community, and special-purpose parks, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and community centers, and maintains over 1,000 acres of public land. The Greater Vallejo Park, Recreation, & Open Space Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in 1994 to initiate, sponsor, promote, and carry out plans, programs, and policies related to these efforts.
