Monarch Camps has been a summer camp in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley since 1971 and was originally founded as a half day camp offering sports lessons in the mornings. Over time, Monarch Camps added a three-week Winter Camp program and expanded from serving families 12 weeks a year to 52 weeks a year. Gary Honjio and Paul Golding structured the camp as a full day camp.
The program is offered in partnership with the Los Angeles College Community District, and Monarch Camps is partnered with Los Angeles Valley College, with Cub Camps at LA City College included as part of the program. Monarch Camps is American Camp Association accredited and has met and passed over 300 standards of safety, program quality, and qualifications to be an ACA Accredited Camp.
During day camps, sample schedules include complimentary morning care starting at 7:30am, group check-in and “Friendship Circle,” rotations through arts and crafts, theatre games or public speaking games, clubs room, special projects, multiple sports or games blocks, swim lessons, indoor games, and an end-of-day Friendship Circle, followed by complimentary afternoon care until 5:30pm. A sample single day camp schedule includes early drop-off from 7:30–9:00am, arts and crafts, gymnastics, rock climbing, provided lunch, theatre games, sports, pick up from 3:00–3:30pm, snack for afternoon care, more sports, board games, and final pick up by 6:30pm.
The After School Camp includes pickup from specified local schools in passenger vans, homework assistance, supplemental academic activities, and a 6:1 student to staff ratio for academic time, along with arts and crafts projects and playtime. Additional offerings include adult gymnastics and adult rock climbing, as well as parties and events.
The mission statement for Monarch Camps states that the program creates a vibrant and exciting environment where kids can have fun while growing and developing essential life skills, with sports and activities that build teamwork, creativity, motor skills, and sportsmanship, and a blend of camp traditions and inclusivity that makes every camper feel like part of the family.
Parent testimonials describe counselors as well-trained, young, friendly, energetic, professional, and enthusiastic, and mention that complimentary before- and after-care was important for working parents and that administration responds promptly to emails, listens to feedback, and works to resolve issues. Parents also report that children receive homework help, experience both structured and unstructured playtime, and have access to full day programs on many days when LAUSD is closed.
