About

Ventura AYSO Region 39 Soccer Programs offers youth soccer through its Core soccer program, EPIC (Everyone Plays In Our Community) soccer program, Playground activity program, and 5U soccer program. The programs include traditional teams, modified play options, and activity-based sessions that use simple, fun activities and games.

• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: EPIC is a 10-week program with 60-minute sessions

Ventura AYSO Region 39 includes the Core Program with traditional teams for ages 5 to 18 years old, with divisions for girls and boys in 6U, 7U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 19U. The 5U program’s stated objective is to provide young players and their parents with a “pressure free” introduction to soccer using simple, fun activities and games that require little to no practice and a minimal time commitment. The Playground activity program focuses on improving physical motor skills as a foundation for an active lifestyle. The EPIC program is described as an alternative for young people who choose to enjoy modified rules, a modified field size, and assistance from a “buddy” on the field as needed, and it has no weekly practices. EPIC is designed for anyone ages 4 to 18 years old regardless of disability, and buddies can earn community service hours or credits, with buddies ages 14 to 18 required to register under the AYSO Youth Volunteer Application and all volunteers and buddies required to complete the Volunteer Application Form for Region 39. The VIP (Very Important Player) Program’s primary objective is to enable players to learn the game of soccer in a fun and stimulating environment with a focus on developing their skills while maintaining a healthy approach to competitive soccer.

Ventura AYSO Region 39 states that shin guards are required for all AYSO activities, athletic shoes or soccer cleats must be worn, no metal cleats or baseball cleats may be worn, and soccer balls are provided for use at the fields so there is no need to bring a ball. The program specifies that ages 5 to 8 years use a Size 3 soccer ball, ages 9 to 12 use a Size 4 soccer ball, and ages 13 and up use a Size 5 soccer ball. Ventura AYSO Region 39 reports that it continues to thrive with over 2,000 players, more than 200 teams, and 700 registered volunteers, and describes itself as the largest youth sports organization in Ventura.

AYSO’s mission is to develop quality youth soccer programs that promote a fun, family environment based on the philosophies of Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Open Registration, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. Region 39 states that under the Everyone Plays philosophy, its goal is for kids to play soccer, mandating that every player on every team must play at least three-quarters of every game, compared with the AYSO National requirement of at least half of every game. The Balanced Teams philosophy is described as forming new teams each year that are as evenly balanced as possible. Positive Coaching is described as encouraging player effort to provide for greater enjoyment and to lead to better-skilled and better-motivated players. Open Registration is described as being open to all children between 4 and 19 years of age who want to register and play soccer, with interest and enthusiasm as the only criteria for playing. Good Sportsmanship is described as being instilled in every facet of AYSO, and Player Development is described as the belief that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities. AYSO’s vision statement is “To provide world class youth soccer programs that enrich children’s lives.”

AYSO was established in 1964, and AYSO Region 39 in Ventura, California was established in 1973.
