About

Alice's Montessori offers practical life activities using everyday kitchen items such as tongs, funnels, pouring pitchers, and scoopers, along with sensorial activities that explore colors, sounds, smells, tastes, sizes, and weight by matching and ordering materials. Children work with math activities including rote counting, quantity to symbol, simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, the positive snake game, the negative snake game, and the bank game, as well as language activities such as picture and name recognition, letter and letter-to-sound recognition, simple word recognition, sounding out words, matching objects to the letters that spell the object, reading basic words, sentence building, and reading books designed for their level. The program also includes writing activities from free-form coloring and drawing shapes to forming letters and writing words and sentences, along with geography, history, science, art, music, celebrations, in-school field trips, and playground activities.

Alice's Montessori has been educating children 3 months to 6 years of age since 1983. The schools are designed to maintain a home-like atmosphere with small toilets, low sinks, tables, chairs, and shelving designed to teach and encourage independence, and playgrounds with space to climb, run, dance, and quiet areas to sit and socialize. The Montessori classroom environment is described as quiet and relaxed, yet exciting and full of challenging academic work that children find fun and rewarding, with activities designed to allow each child to achieve his or her full academic potential.

The program uses sensorial materials to support ordering and categorizing information from the senses, and a progression-based math and language curriculum that allows children to work at their own pace. Geography activities use globes with blue water and sandpaper continents, colored continent globes, world maps, and separate maps of each continent, and history activities use a timeline as a fundamental Montessori apparatus to illustrate the progression of events and stories of historical figures. Science activities include hands-on experiences and experimentation, with lessons in biology and zoology supported by animals in the classroom.

Art materials such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, paint, feathers, stickers, and stamps are always available for children to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces, and music is an integral part of the classroom experience with classical music, popular children’s songs, instruments, and movement to music through dance. Celebrations include birthdays, graduations, and cultural events from many countries. In-school field trips feature community helpers such as a fireman or policeman, visitors from the Lindsey Museum with a variety of animals, “The Mad Scientist” show, and “Save Nature.org.”

At Alice’s Montessori, specially trained teachers will love and nurture each child while guiding him or her along an individual path of learning, and the staff is described as intuitive and experienced educators. The environment is purposefully designed to fit the needs of children, including child-sized fixtures and furniture, and playgrounds designed for both individual play and group activities with plenty of space and quiet areas. The program holds semi-annual open houses.

Parent testimonials describe Alice’s Montessori as having warm and loving staff, with children who feel fulfilled and greet their parents with smiles, and teachers who “teach from the heart.” Parents report that their children often do not want to leave at the end of the day, that the kids get a lot of individual attention while also learning to work in groups and independently on a variety of activities, and that the school has consistently brought in caring and nurturing teachers. One parent with two children at Alice’s over five years expresses admiration for the consistent quality and care of the teachers and staff and states that their children have thrived there.

Community involvement includes visits from community helpers such as a fireman or policeman, visitors from the Lindsey Museum with animals, and in-school field trips from “Save Nature.org.” Licensing credentials include Preschool Walnut Creek License #073403870, Preschool Pleasant Hill License #073405687, and Infant and Toddler Center License #073407486.
