About

Kid Time offers pre-school learning activities called Ruff Dogs, along with art projects, cooking fun, and time playing in the yard outside. Children take part in worm digging, body painting, bug catching, and many messy, creatively based art projects. The program also includes special events such as picnics, potlucks, Ooey Gooey Night, Kid Time Campout, Cinco de Mayo, and Baby Olympics.

• Ages: 0–6 years old

Kid Time is a family-owned childcare company with four sites and has been providing quality childcare in the Walnut Creek area since 1984. The program uses a play-based curriculum and states that children are learning every day through play and hands-on activities. Kid Time describes its environment as inclusive to all kinds of families and notes that it makes decisions based on the individual needs of each child rather than the convenience of the adults involved.

Kid Time offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum from 2 years old to 6, with Pre-K including kindergarten readiness in social-emotional, physical, and academic areas. Classes are broken up based on developmental readiness rather than calendar age, and there are no scheduled potty times, as children are taken individually when they need to go. The program offers a non-nap group for children who have grown out of naps to do quiet activities, encourages healthy eating without requiring children to clean their plate, and has teachers who encourage and teach problem solving and help children work out conflicts individually. Children go outside in cold, hot, and sometimes sprinkling rain, and the play-based environment includes room to move and accommodations for both high-energy and more individual play. Families are offered full evaluations before children graduate so parents know where children are academically, socially/emotionally, and physically.

Kid Time describes itself as a community for its staff and families and offers many opportunities for people to meet and spend time together, including events such as Picnics, Potlucks, Ooey Gooey Night, Kid Time Campout, Cinco de Mayo, and Baby Olympics, and notes that families can have connections that last a lifetime. The leadership team includes Leah Rosenthal-Kambic as Director, Co-Owner, and, as of January 2018, owner of Kid Time; Jessica as Multi-Site Coordinator and Co-Owner; and Kirsti as Admin Manager/Unicorn. Leah obtained a BA from UC Berkeley in 2005 in Social Welfare. In 2022, Miss Leah began a Parent Coaching business called Parent Time and also hosts the Parent Time podcast.

One parent, Carolyn G, reports feeling no hesitation leaving children at Kid Time and describes a comprehensive program that focuses on allowing a child's emerging personality to blossom and preparing them for life, and notes that her daughter and fellow Kid Time children were ready and well-equipped for kindergarten. Another parent, Susan J, shares that her son attended Kid Time 13 years ago, that they remain connected with the staff, and that she views it as a place with a strong community where acceptance and learning through play create a safe, secure, and fun environment. A third parent, David B, notes that both of his children had the same teachers over more than four years, and recalls Leah explaining that children might come home covered in paint or grime because the mission was to let kids play and have fun. A fourth parent, Malgosia R, describes being first attracted by the yard, happy and engaged children, and cheerful staff, and mentions that her child enjoys Miss Jessica's pre-school learning activities (Ruff Dogs), art projects, cooking fun with Miss Sarah, and playing in the yard outside, and that the family appreciates the learning-through-play philosophy, on-site-cooked meals, and the director Leah’s helpful and “can-do” problem-solving approach.
