About

WCYAA Basketball is a youth basketball program where children play organized basketball games and take part in team practices. The program includes a Rookie League for five- and six-year-olds that uses a half-court format, and it also offers a regular 5-on-5 full-court program for eligible first graders and older players. WCYAA will not offer basketball this season.

• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Rookie League players (five and six year olds) have time slots on Saturday mornings, with about 20 minutes of practice during their time slot followed immediately by a game; all 1st and 2nd grade teams practice on Saturdays 30 minutes before their scheduled game, with the game immediately following practice

WCYAA has been providing youth sports since 1957. Head coaches complete a NAYS basketball coach training program that takes about three hours online, a free short online concussion course mandated by law, and a free short online course on sudden cardiac arrest, and every head coach completes a concussion protocol course. Parents and children age 6 and older must sign and return a Concussion and Head Injury Information Sheet before players are allowed to practice or play. Parents are encouraged to be present at all practices and games, and neither coaches nor WCYAA staff may give children any medication.

Every player is guaranteed to play two full quarters, or half, of every game. Children of the head coach and one designated assistant coach are placed on their respective teams, and siblings are placed on the same team if they are registered in the same division. Both moms and dads are welcomed as coaches in all divisions for both boys and girls, and WCYAA pays for coaches to complete the NAYS basketball coach training program. Head coaches receive a $75 rebate at the end of the season, or $25 for the Rookie Division.

Uniforms, including a jersey and shorts, are provided for each player at no extra charge and must be worn at all games, and these uniforms belong to the player at the end of the season; Rookie League players receive a jersey only. Families considering enrolling their child in basketball are referred to CYO Basketball (Saint Mary’s CYO, St. John Vianney CYO, or St. Francis CYO in Walnut Creek), LMYA Basketball, and Next Level Basketball. Registrants agree to follow any COVID-related rules and regulations imposed by the entities that rent gym time. No dogs or other pets are allowed in the gyms or at practices, and no food or drink is allowed in the gyms, although snacks and water may be consumed outside. Families are asked to keep all items out of sight and lock their cars when parking.
