About
Digital NEST Career Programs include weekly Quest Club meetings, guest speaker events, field trips and industry tours, leadership opportunities, and hands-on technical training. Participants work on web design, web development, and video production, use industry-level software, and create portfolio projects. The program also offers career workshops such as resume building and networking, 1:1 career coaching, access to professional mentorship, and support to gain professional certifications, including through activities like fireside chats with industry leaders, alumni days, and industry tours such as a recent visit to Netflix.
• Ages: 14–18 years old
• Schedule: Meets on Wednesdays from 4:30–6:00pm in Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons, with Fall and Spring running 10 weeks and Summer running 8 weeks
• Price: Membership is free, the only investment requested is time.
Career Exploration meets weekly to help participants explore goals, discover different career options, and learn professional skills like communication, collaboration, and organization skills. Career Pathways is a one-year program that includes hands-on experience with industry software, technical skills, portfolio development, interview support, professional certifications, and mentorship. bizzNEST is a one-year paid internship (15–20 hours per week) that functions as an in-house digital media agency where participants work with real clients and receive career coaching and mentorship. Members can access NEST resources and use a co-working space even when they are not in a specific program, and Digital NEST provides the necessary equipment so a personal computer is not required. The NEST offers support in obtaining optional certifications through completion of the Pathways program and in bizzNEST, including CompTIA A+, CAPM, and FAA 107 (drone license).
Digital NEST’s mission is to provide underserved Latinx and all underserved youth in California with the skills, resources, and network to build and launch successful careers, and this mission also describes its role in the community. The organization is led by CEO and Founder Jacob Martinez. One alum, Mytzy Escalante, describes joining Digital NEST in college while studying computer science and now works as a Software Engineer at Habu, where she reports using creativity, organization, and leadership skills developed at the NEST on innovative, impactful projects.
