Watsonville Youth Center, 30 Maple Ave, Watsonville, CA 95076
About
Play-Well TEKnologies LEGO-Inspired Engineering Programs has students design and build leaping dolphins, buzzing beehives, and towering giraffes using LEGO materials. Participants work on engineering and architectural projects using LEGO parts while solving real-world engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, and engineering.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: August 5–9, 2024, Monday–Friday, 9:00am–12:00pm
Play-Well TEKnologies provides project-based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering to children, ages 5–14, using LEGO, with a focus on developing and enhancing students' problem solving and critical thinking skills and introducing concepts and vocabulary of engineering and architecture as well as new building techniques. The curriculum is designed by engineers, is ever evolving, and projects are rotated seasonally, with flexibility to adjust to the interests and experience level of the students. In each class, projects typically start with an introduction and short presentation by the instructor, followed by a design and building assignment, and instructors circulate to assist children and offer advanced challenges and modifications for any model, while encouraging students to use engineering terminology throughout the class. Students have access to tens of thousands of LEGO parts, utilizing over 20,000 pieces of LEGO for each class, and participants do not get to take any of the LEGO materials home with them.
Play-Well TEKnologies has been growing future engineers since 1997 and operates nationwide. Parents are encouraged to provide a peanut-free snack for their child, Play-Well is not responsible for any lost or broken devices, and for parents of children allergic to peanuts, Play-Well cannot guarantee that LEGO pieces in their kits are completely free of peanut oils. Play-Well TEKnologies states that its goal is to have students foster a greater appreciation of how things work and to encourage the qualities of inquisitiveness, self-reliance, and self-confidence in children. More information is available through Watsonville Parks & Community Services.
