• Ages: 3–18 years old
Dance instructors for Westminster Arts Academy Pop Ballet are carefully selected professionals in the dance industry and/or have a college degree in dance, and the academy employs over 40 highly trained instructors in music, dance, and art with qualified training and/or professional performance experience. The Pop Ballet program follows a mission that includes opening doors to creative expression beyond traditional ballet, using movements inspired by music students are passionate about, and encouraging exploration of movements not traditionally seen in classical ballet. The academy offers multiple dance styles in addition to Pop Ballet, including Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Ballet Folklorico, and offers music, dance, and art lessons in one location. Students in Pop Ballet and other dance programs can perform in biannual formal concerts in June and December on a big stage, as well as in a real theater every summer and winter, and the academy does not charge students a fee to perform in recitals, with all family and friends welcome to attend. The academy performs monthly at local senior citizen communities and also appears at city festivals, local shopping centers, and other community events, and is described as a family business that is heavily active in the community. Westminster Arts Academy was awarded the National Music School of the Year Award in 2019, made the front page of both the Los Angeles Times and the Nguoi Viet, and was featured on NBC and Univision. The organization’s music education history dates back to the mid-1960s, has been located in the City of Westminster since 1991, opened its current Beach Blvd location in 2004, and has been in the music teaching business for over 50 years, as part of the Learn The Arts! brand and the latest generation of one of California's longest-running privately owned music schools. The founder was Dr. Robert Rios (deceased 2013), and the schools are now run by his son Francis and daughters Teresa and Augustina. The academy uses a Learning Management System with lesson notes, uploaded materials, chat, and practice logging, and offers month-to-month lessons without semester minimums. For Pop Ballet classes, ladies need a leotard, tights, skirt, and ballet shoes, gentlemen can wear a tight-fitting shirt with tight pants and ballet shoes, hair is to be pulled up in a bun and out of the face, and the academy partners with local and online dance retail stores to help students find the right gear.
