Cache Creek Conservancy Environmental Education & Internship Programs include habitat restoration for native wildlife and plants, learning the Cache Creek Wintun homeland ecology, and learning how restoration and stewardship can re-create healthy water and soils. Participants can also take part in birdwatching, picnicking near the old barn, strolling along the wetlands boardwalk, hiking the trails, photographing wildlife, yoga under the oaks, a mindfulness workshop based on the Kabat-Zinn method, and volunteering with habitat restoration and other nature-related activities.
• Schedule: The Cache Creek Nature Preserve is open Sunday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the 2026 season of Yoga Under the Oaks every Sunday at 8:15 AM, Sunset Fridays on the second Friday of each month, and Volunteer Day on the first Sunday of each month.

The Cache Creek Conservancy was formed in 1995 and became a nonprofit public benefit corporation in February 1996, and it operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Its mission is to restore, preserve and protect the Cache Creek watershed, using environmental stewardship and education as two of the ways to work toward this mission. The Conservancy operates from and manages the Jan T. Lowrey Cache Creek Nature Preserve and focuses on riparian restoration along a fourteen mile stretch of the Lower Cache Creek, serving as the primary implementing agency of the Cache Creek Area Plan, an element of Yolo County’s general plan. Environmental education programs emphasize interactive learning with a focus on the ecology, culture, or history of the Cache Creek watershed, and the Conservancy emphasizes college-level Internship Programs, with past offerings including the “Experience the Creek” program for primary school level, which is currently on hiatus.
The Tending & Gathering Garden is a 3-acre demonstration garden for traditional land stewardship practices of California’s Indigenous people, especially the Wintun, and is a collaboration between the Native American community and the Conservancy. No pesticides or herbicides are used in the Tending & Gathering Garden, which serves as a source for cultural practitioners to gather plant material and provides a place for hands-on education, as well as a safe and accessible area for Native Californians to gather key plant materials for basketry, medicine and other cultural needs. The Cache Creek Nature Preserve is described as a sanctuary for wildlife, water and plants, rather than a park for people. Funding for the Conservancy has been provided by voluntary support from four major mining companies operating on Cache Creek, which agreed to contribute five cents per ton of gravel sold, and within the framework of the Cache Creek Area Plan, the aggregate industry is to financially contribute to the Conservancy. The volunteer community includes individuals and small groups who are described as passionate about nature, the Cache Creek Watershed and hands-on experiences, and visitors are instructed to stay on the trails, not feed wild animals, look and listen for rattlesnakes, keep children with adults at all times, not bring dogs, and not visit if sick or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
