During the 5-day/4-night Colorado backcountry trip, Leaders-In-Training organize every aspect of the trip, including menu planning, supply decisions, and gear packing. They navigate backcountry trails, cook their own meals, attempt to summit a high peak, camp under the stars, and follow Leave No Trace Principles. The program includes a solo experience where participants hike out from basecamp to spend reflective time on their own and are trusted to assess challenges and make their own decisions.

The program is a 3-week Leaders-In-Training experience for 9th–12th graders that is designed to coach the oldest campers with leadership development, critical thinking, and self-reflection. Leadership development takes place under the supervision of experienced instructors, and Leaders-In-Training learn what it takes to lead, including being a role model for others. Entering 11th–12th graders can apply to become part of the Guide-In-Training Expedition Program.

Campers take on core outdoor activities and many other classic activities in an inclusive, fun community. Avid4 Adventure organizes big adventures in beautiful recreation areas and transports campers to authentic local recreation areas they can keep coming back to explore. Avid4 provides access to top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids, and backpacks are available to rent for an additional fee.

Sunday check-in is at 3:30 PM and Friday check-out is at 3:00 PM. Families can register through February 28th for the lowest price of the season. A Multi-Session/Sibling discount offers $75 off per session after the first when families mix and match sessions, and a Referral Program gives friends $50 off their first camp and provides a $50 credit for future use when they make a purchase.

Avid4 Adventure states that it does everything in its power to keep kids safe but does not “pack them up in bubble wrap,” and instead gives them the knowledge and confidence to take calculated, well-communicated risks. The organization operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service.

Avid4 Instructors are described as insatiable outdoors experts who love adventuring and working with kids, are all 18 and older, and have safety and skills training. The staff is described as incredibly well-trained and professional, and Avid4 Instructors are identified as the number one point of positive feedback from parents of campers. The seasoned team of adventurers and educators is described as the best in the business, and experienced staff provide real-time feedback to these young leaders as they shadow them.

At the helm of Avid4 Adventure is David Secunda, former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. The mission states a belief in the transformative power of the outdoors, with kids building confidence, making new friends, and mastering essential skills in activities like paddling, biking, rock climbing, and hiking. Avid4 Adventure was created out of a desire to give kids a love of outdoor activity and to ensure the future caretaking of the planet.

Avid4 Adventure is a Certified B Corp committed to public transparency and accountability. Its summer camps are accredited by the American Camp Association and have been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps. The organization offers an Avid4 Adventure Guarantee and describes its customer experience as one that exceeds parents’ expectations.

Parent testimonials describe counselors as welcoming and reassuring and mention that campers learned outdoor skills along with leadership, collaboration, and communication. One parent notes that their child loved the thrill and adventure of the backpacking experience and that the camp pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped develop her self-confidence. Other parents report that their children discovered new favorite activities such as stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, and biking, and that staff are mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with kids. Parents also report that their kids were active every day and that their children still talk about camp and want to return.
