Pedalheads started in 1986, launched Pedalheads Bike camps in 1995, and began Pedalheads Trail riding in 2007. The company expanded in the US starting in Seattle in 2013, opened its first Pedalheads-owned and operated pool in West Vancouver, BC in 2021, and launched Pedalheads+ in 2022. Pedalheads runs programs at more than 250 locations across Canada and the US and reports that over 600,000 kids have taken part in its programs.
Instructors undergo thorough background checks before joining the team and receive training in skill development, safety, class management, and program delivery. The program has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or discrimination of any kind and follows a nut-aware policy that asks families to avoid bringing nuts if possible. Camps and lessons run rain or shine, with possible adjustments or cancellations in hazardous weather, and programs may be impacted by air quality and extreme weather based on guidelines from Canadian and American health agencies.
For bike camp, kids need a bicycle, a properly fitted bike helmet, a water bottle and snack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe athletic shoes, and a small backpack for belongings, along with items like mosquito repellent, rain gear, sunscreen, any required medication such as an EpiPen, and for all-day campers, sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes. For trail riding camp, kids need a ready-to-ride bike that is at least 14", without training wheels, with front and back hand brakes and gears, plus a properly fitted bike helmet, a small backpack they can ride with, a water bottle or hydration pack and snack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe athletic shoes (not rain boots or closed-toe sandals), mosquito repellent, rain gear, sunscreen as needed, any required medication such as an EpiPen, and for all-day campers, sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes.
The mission of Pedalheads is to inspire kids to believe in themselves and to create “I did it!” moments through swim, bike, trail riding, and soccer programs for kids across North America. The founder and CEO is Claudia Sjoberg, who received the 2017 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur TELUS Trailblazer Award in 2018. Through Pedalheads+ Plus, the organization is bringing programs to underserved communities.
One parent from British Columbia reported that their child went from not being able to swim to swimming by day three in a small class with an instructor who provided clear summaries after each lesson. Another parent from Ontario described an instructor as patient and gentle, and said their child went from scared to wanting to return the next week. A parent from Colorado shared that their child’s trail camp involved many miles of riding and that their child was eager to return each day, describing the camp as well run with a knowledgeable team.
