About
Survival Skills Day Camp gives campers a full week of hands-on outdoor activities including navigation, animal tracking, tool making, fire building and safety, hiking, and canoeing. Campers practice basic navigation skills, explore the principles of Leave No Trace, observe and identify useful plants, track animals, identify scat, and learn how to find food and medicine in the wild. They also fashion utensils and shelter from gathered materials, try flintknapping, practice paddling a canoe with a focus on water safety, learn how to read terrain to find water, and learn how to purify the water they find.

The program is taught by experienced instructors described as incredibly well-trained and professional staff, all 18 and older with serious safety and skills training. The leadership team is headed by David Secunda, former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Avid4 Adventure’s mission states that it believes in the transformative power of the outdoors and that at Avid4 Adventure kids build confidence, make new friends, and master essential skills in activities like paddling, biking, rock climbing, and hiking. The organization is a Certified B Corp, is accredited by the American Camp Association, and has been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps. It operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
The Survival Skills Day Camp is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which promises an authentic outdoor adventure, incredibly well-trained and professional staff, and increased confidence at every Avid4 Adventure camp; if these promises are not met, the next Avid4 Adventure camp is free (“your next Avid4 Adventure camp is on us”). Avid4 states that it organizes big adventures in beautiful recreation areas, that its summer camps are highly acclaimed, and that its programs evolve as campers grow from age 3 to 17. The program states that it does everything in its power to keep kids safe while allowing calculated, well-communicated risks, and that every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved, how to prevent them, and how to respond if something goes wrong.
Parent testimonials describe the camp as a favorite, mention that a child learned to ride a bike without training wheels during camp, and say that staff are mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with kids. Other testimonials note that campers were active every day, learned new outdoor skills, and continued talking about camp and wanting to return.
