Gonzo Tennis Academy offers tennis through activities such as the Spring Warm Up, USTA Tournaments, and summer camps. The Spring Warm Up includes play days, challenge matches, meets with other programs, 3v3 tournaments, and other activities on the courts. The program also offers additional tennis play through USTA Tournaments and seasonal summer camps.

Gonzo Tennis Academy was founded in 2004 by Gonzalo “Gonzo” Garcia. Gonzalo “Gonzo” Garcia is the founder and owner of Gonzo Tennis. The mission of Gonzo Tennis Academy is “Building great players and great people,” and it was founded with the idea of bringing quality tennis programs to the Boulder community and beyond. The mission statement also notes a goal of creating programs that promote and develop the growth of tennis in every club where he works and to include the entire family in the education and enjoyment of tennis.

The program uses a game-based tennis format and offers programs for youth ages 5 to 11, juniors ages 11 to 16, adults at beginner and intermediate levels, and advanced juniors through Team Gonzo Tennis. It also offers pickleball programs at beginner and intermediate levels. The Spring Warm Up is described as an 8-week activity with play days, challenge matches, meets with other programs, 3v3 tournaments, and other on-court activities. Summer camps run in Boulder on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am to 12pm.

CARA Tennis at Gonzo Tennis Academy includes categories for 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 15 and up, each with four levels: Beginner, Intermediate/Beginner, Intermediate/Advanced, and Advanced. All CARA participants have the right to participate in the state tournament during the last week of July. The state tournament is a single-elimination competition in which state champions are decided.

Gonzalo “Gonzo” Garcia has been teaching tennis for over 35 years and started teaching at age 15. He has been a USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) certified coach since 2002 and holds USPTA Elite Professional status, and he is a Level 1 teacher with the Argentine Tennis Association. Staff credentials also include Diego Garcia with an AAT–ITF Certificate, Adrian Ciocci as RSPA Certified and Head Pro, Lynne Buhlig as PTR Certified and Head Pro, and Mike Phillips as RSPA Certified and Head Pro. Additional listed credentials and roles include USPTA/RSPA Certified coach since 2002, USTA Intermountain Board of Directors member, USTA Colorado Board of Directors President, USTA Youth Council member, and USTA Colorado Junior Recreation Committee.

In 2001, Gonzo Garcia moved to Boulder, and in 2004 he founded Gonzo Tennis Academy. In 2007, Gonzo Tennis partnered with the City of Boulder to be in charge of all teaching programs. In 2007 the program had 400 registrations, and in 2018 close to 2,500 people participated in his tennis programs. Gonzo Tennis has been offering tennis programs for youth and adults for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for over 10 years. Since 2015, Gonzo has been in charge of the tennis program for the I Have A Dream (IHAD) Foundation in Boulder. The program also notes that Gonzo had the opportunity to start working with the City of Longmont.

Testimonials from parents, players, and community members describe experiences with Gonzo Tennis Academy. One parent, Sean Donnelly, notes that Gonzo keeps things fun and light while teaching racquet skills and hand/eye coordination, and that his daughter looks forward to class every week. Young participants such as Freja Greenberg (age 5), Finn Muller (age 4), and Johann Haller (age 12) share short comments about enjoying tennis with Gonzo. Adult participants and community members, including Lane Landrith, Susan Prater, Sarah Baines, Daniel Quinlan, and Becky Oleskey, provide feedback on coaching, events, and league results. Boulder resident Betsy Silvester describes her son’s advancement to the High Performance program and varsity play at Boulder High, and notes her own experience in adult classes. From the City of Boulder, Matt Kamhi states that Gonzo has been offering tennis programs for youth and adults for over 10 years, describes his dedication and staff, and notes that classes routinely have waitlists. Kamhi also states that in 2018 Gonzo’s contracted program was the department’s most popular, with close to 2,500 participants compared to 400 registrations in 2007.
