Gator Junior Golf was founded in 2016 as a 501(c)3 non-profit sports-based youth development program. The program’s mission is to enhance the lives of youth by providing educational programs that build character, promote team-building, and establish mentorship through the game of golf. The curriculum is centered around character development, team-building, mentorship, and teaching core values such as honesty and respect, along with a healthy habits curriculum that covers physical, emotional, and social health. Physical health topics include balanced diet, exercise, and safety, including stretching and setting boundaries for safety from swinging golf clubs and flying golf balls. Emotional health topics include learning from past and present, developing a plan for the future, and self control, while social health topics include maintaining healthy relationships and impact in digital environments such as texting and social media.

The program offers individual need-based scholarships through its primary program. Advanced level kids are encouraged to volunteer for beginner level classes to earn community service hours and mentor younger students. Approximately 15% of class enrollment includes children with a disability, and coaches are trained to handle challenges faced by children with disabilities. Gator Junior Golf reports that 100% of kids progress from one level to the next each year.

Gator Junior Golf’s Founder and Executive Director is Sean Warner. The program is described as a sports-based youth development program that focuses on teaching golf skills and life skills through the game of golf. Gator Junior Golf runs targeted after-school programs with Girls Place, Reichert House, Special Olympics of Alachua, and Shands Children’s Hospital. It partnered with Girls Place and Reichert House to deliver golf instruction at no charge to those organizations or their participants. Gator Junior Golf has golf programs with Shands Children’s Hospital and Special Olympics of Alachua, and works with Special Olympics of Alachua to assist in delivering a golf program to children of all abilities. For the Shands Children’s Hospital program, Gator Junior Golf uses plastic golf clubs and mini tennis balls (SNAG) to teach kids in the confines of the hospital.
