About
Children's Art Classes offers studio-based art education that includes painting, drawing, design, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, clay, pencil, and pastels. The program introduces students to more than 40 art techniques and a wide range of mediums and different artistic applications. Students can continue their classes year after year without repeating a project.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Nine-month programs of study
Children's Art Classes was established in 1997 and has been serving the Jacksonville community since 2009. The program offers nine-month programs in over 40 areas of art as part of a comprehensive art education program. All teachers are CAC trained. The mission of Children's Art Classes is to provide a comprehensive art education program that enriches lives, raises self-esteem, and improves the academic performance of students.
Children's Art Classes reports that students see improved grades and school performance, and that many honor students graduate from the programs. The program states that 99 percent of its students are accepted to La Villa School of the Arts and that 100 percent of its students graduate with a high school diploma. Several students have earned art scholarships, many students participate in leading art shows, and some students receive art scholarships or pursue higher education in art. The program also reports that classes give a therapeutic outlet for emotions and difficult life challenges, that students join a community, develop friendships, and feel comfortable in themselves, and that it promotes art for life, including an outlet for future art business ownership or careers.
Children's Art Classes was founded by Barbara Gay, the founder of Children’s Art Classes. The program has been named Art Classes Provider of the Year by Education Insider.
One parent, Teri W., shared that her child attended classes for six years, built an art portfolio there, and is now in art school. Another parent, Rachel M., noted that her 9-year-old has taken homeschool art classes and summer camp, with projects in clay, pencil, and pastels. A parent identified as B.C. described the program as a place for children to learn the fundamentals of art, mentioned Ms. Barbara and Stephanie as knowledgeable, and highlighted an end-of-year art show where every child displays work from the year.
