Children’s Bereavement Center’s mission is to empower children, young adults and their families to adjust to life after the loss of a loved one within a supportive community of their peers and to promote healthful grief, healing and growth. The organization provides service to the community for the entire family. Free grief support groups are available for children ages 4 and older, teens, high school-age youth, young adults ages 18 and older, and adults, and are available in English, Spanish, and Creole. Adult support groups are available in both English and Spanish.
CBC developed and uses its “Healthful Grieving Model,” which is grounded in research and best practices for addressing grief and bereavement, as well as healthful adaptation to loss. This model includes principles such as grief being a normal, natural, and individualized process, and that people have the ability to heal at their own pace and in their own unique way. It states that the intensity and duration of grief is unique for each individual, that a caring, accepting environment greatly enhances the healing process, and that camaraderie among grieving individuals plays a vital role in their healing. The model also states that the group experience helps children and adults regain a sense of control and empowerment.
According to CBC, when this Healthful Grieving Model is used in support groups, participants are able to share experiences with others who have suffered the death of a loved one and reduce their isolation, thereby normalizing the grieving process. The model states that participants are able to build upon the strengths of each other, apply effective tools and strategies to cope with problems associated with their loss, and regain a sense of control and empowerment after a traumatic event. It also states that participants are able to increase their awareness of available resources and support systems, maintain their self-esteem and trust in others, ritualize and integrate the loss in a significant way, develop and maintain feelings of hope and life in the future, and acknowledge growth and healing.
Free perinatal and infant loss grief support groups for mothers, fathers, and couples are also offered. An English perinatal and infant loss grief support group meets on Tuesdays at 7pm, and a Spanish perinatal and infant loss grief support group meets on Wednesdays at 7pm, with registration available by calling or emailing. Children’s Bereavement Center’s vision is to restore a sense of hope for the future to children and families who have lost a loved one and to establish its model of peer support as the best practice model of child and family bereavement services. The organization lists an affiliation with the National Board for Certified Counselors.
