Dance NOW! Miami Educational Programs include in-school residencies, the World Dance Summer Intensive, the Dance NOW! Youth Ensemble, and community performances at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. The programs also feature the Dance NOW! Miami Summer Dance Intensive, the Ekphrasis Project, the Daniel Lewis Dance Sampler, New Voices, and the Covid(eos) series of dance video shorts.
Dance NOW! Miami was established in 2000. The programs are guided by Founding Co-Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, along with Associate Director Ally (Allyn) Ginns-Ayers. Baumgarten and Salterini have over 60 combined years of teaching experience and international reputations as educators across three continents. Baumgarten is a K-12 State Certified teacher, and Salterini sits on the Board of the Florida Dance Education Organization.
Dance NOW! Miami's mission is to create, promote and produce contemporary dance of the highest caliber and, through performance, arts education, community leadership and innovative programming, nurture new talents, foster artistic collaborations and make the art of dance accessible to diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally. Its educational mission is to provide multi-faceted training and pathways to higher education, professional opportunities and inclusion for Miami’s economically, culturally, socially and geographically diverse population.
Dance NOW! Miami has reached over 60,000 children in South Florida through in-school residencies, the World Dance Summer Intensive, the Dance NOW! Youth Ensemble, and community performances at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. Its collaborations include over 260 artists and organizations such as New York’s Limón Dance Company, Mexico City Ballet, Dança em Diálogos from Lisbon, Portugal, and Opus Ballet from Florence, Italy. The Daniel Lewis Dance Sampler showcases established Florida-based companies, and New Voices features emerging contemporary choreographers from around the nation. The Dance NOW! Youth Ensemble, in collaboration with Miami Arts Charter School, includes mentoring, performance and scholarship opportunities for highly talented youth.
The Masterpiece in Motion series focuses on reconstructing iconic works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The Ekphrasis Project creates performances in museums, galleries, and architectural landmarks that are tailored to each hosting venue. The Covid(eos) series consists of dance video shorts released during the COVID-19 crisis. In 2022, Dance NOW! Miami was recognized as “Best Dance Company” by the Miami New Times.
Reviews have described Dance NOW! Miami as showing “...unabashed beauty...” (Annie Hollingsworth, Artburst) and “...carnal and courageous, with an impressive range of movement and motion,” (Mia Leonin, Miami Art Guide).
