About

Kidz XL offers an after-school program, summer camp, and after-school tutoring that include homework help, literacy development, physical fitness, character-building activities, social skills development, and sports and physical fitness activities. Children take part in activities such as learning the skills of a sport, playing that sport, reading out loud, a daily “Power Hour” talk, and a basketball camp. The program includes both an after-school program and summer camp that focus on reading, sports, and structured group activities.

• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: After-school program operates 36 weeks out of the year and currently serves around 100 students a day; summer camp runs 6 to 9 weeks immediately following the last day of Miami-Dade Public Schools and serves up to 150 students a day
• Price: The after-school program is $55 per week plus a one-time $50 registration fee per family; the summer camp is $90 per week plus a one-time $50 registration fee per family

Kidz XL began on June 20, 2005, with six weeks of summer day camps funded by a $25,000 grant, and in August 2006 it added after-school tutoring starting with 3 students. In 2007, La Viña received its first contract with The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade County, which still funds Kidz XL and has described it as an innovative after-school program that promotes academic excellence and provides homework help, literacy development, physical fitness, character-building activities, social skills development, and sports and physical fitness activities. Early camps focused on literacy and physical fitness, with each week including an hour in the morning learning skills of a sport, an hour in the afternoon playing that sport, an hour of reading out loud, and a “Power Hour” life-skill talk, and the group spent most of the early years reading through William J. Bennett’s “Book of Virtues.”

Kidz XL is described in its mission statement as more than an afterschool and summer camp program, as a catalyst for children to blossom into great men and women, an anchor of support for families, and a transforming influence in the Westchester/Olympia Heights communities of Miami. The mission statement also describes the program as going beyond the classroom and curriculum to be available to help families in every aspect of life, with directors and volunteer youth described as loving, caring, and committed mentors dedicated to the faith, future, and character of each student enrolled. The program reports having a paid staff of 12 directors and coaches along with many volunteer youth and adults, and notes that its founder, Rollo Casiple, who is also Pastor of True Vine Christian Church/La Viña del Señor, has never taken his salary from Kidz XL.

Community involvement has included a free lunch provided by Miami-Dade County during early camps and support from volunteer youth groups from Kearney, Nebraska; Kenosha, Wisconsin; New York City; and a group from the FIU football team. Families are instructed to download, print, and bring the Kidz XL Combined After-School and Summer Camp 2025–2026 Application in English or Spanish when enrolling.
