STARability Foundation has roots in 1983, when about a dozen parents formed a nonprofit organization known as the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled (FDD). In 2016, the Trailblazer Academy launched, followed by the Jr. Trailblazer Academy in 2017. In 2018, the organization changed its name to STARability Foundation, and in 2019 it opened the STAR Store & Studio and started its vocational services program. In 2020, STARability shifted program delivery to virtual platforms, and in 2022 it moved into a new administrative and program space on Goodlette-Frank Rd. in the Advance Medical building. The mission of STARability Foundation is to transform the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. STARability offers inclusive programs for hundreds of individuals ages 14 and older, including the Trailblazer Academy for people 18 and older who have aged out of high school and the Jr. Trailblazer Academy for individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 transitioning into young adulthood. The STAR Store & Studio operates as an upscale resale store and vocational site where participants can work and create artisan gifts. STARability earned its first Gold Seal of Transparency from GuideStar and currently holds a Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid (GuideStar) and a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator.
