Sunshine Child Programs is a not-for-profit child care provider that has been providing school-age child care programs in Broward County since 1992. All programs are licensed and insured and operate under the policies and directives of the Division of Children & Family Services and the Broward County School Board. Sunshine is one of the highest rated after school care programs in Broward County, has passed all licensing inspections since 1992, and has a 100% safety rating with all school and city locations year after year. Sunshine has several locations in the summer funded by the Children’s Services Council of Broward County and is recognized for meeting or exceeding quality standards set by The Children and Family Services Licensing Department, the Broward County School Board, and the Broward County Children Services Council. Since 1992, Sunshine has been nominated year after year for The Broward County School Board’s Community Partnership of the Year Award and has received accolades and professional recognition from the schools and communities it serves.

All camp locations have a supervisor on site and a ratio of one counselor for every 20 campers. Staff are college-aged or older with child care experience, meet or exceed requirements from the Broward County School Board, State of Florida, Department of Children and Families, Town of Davie, and Sunshine Child Programs, and must be at least 18 years old. Staff are cleared through the Broward County School Board and the Department of Children and Families with local and federal background checks, are fingerprinted, and must pass drug testing, with additional screening performed by the FBI. Staff are trained with certification in First Aid and CPR, Child Abuse and Neglect, Anti Bullying, and Medication Dispense. All staff are required to complete 45 hours of child care training within one year of hire, and all full-time staff are required to take 45 hours of child development coursework and receive certification for a CDA. Sunshine states that safety is the first and highest priority, and Sunshine Child Programs does not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or political orientation.

Sunshine offers recreational, academic, and grant-funded camps, with recreational camp programs available on all Teacher Planning Days, select holidays, Winter Break, Spring Break, and all summer long. There is no additional charge for before and after care hours within 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Sunshine has grant-funded camps and accepts assistance from the Early Learning Coalition of Broward for financially qualifying families. Sunshine does not offer daily rates for camp.

The mission of Sunshine Child Programs is to have highly trained, professional staff who are cheerful, responsive, and nurturing and to create an environment where staff can stay motivated to continually create a positive and successful learning environment for the children in their care.

Families are asked to send each camper with one bottle of spray sunscreen on the first day of camp, which will be shared unless a specific labeled sunscreen is provided for only their camper. Campers are asked to arrive with bathing suits under their clothes, wear their Sunshine shirt on water park days (not required on pool days), and bring a bookbag with a change of clothes, a towel, and sandals or Crocs if preferred. A plastic bag inside the bookbag for wet clothes is suggested, and parents are asked not to send pool clothes in a shopping bag or loose plastic bag. Parents can choose to send lunch, and there is no access to refrigerators, microwaves, or silverware.

Parent testimonials describe children enjoying homework assistance, learning activities, kid-friendly parties, aftercare, tutoring, and a variety of camp activities and trips. Parents mention weekly planned activities, multiple field trips each week, and activities such as visits to the zoo, children’s museums, and water parks. Several parents state that their children have attended both aftercare and summer camp for multiple years and that their children are happy to attend and make friends. Specific staff and directors, including Mr. Jessie, Ms. Daymi, and Marisa, are mentioned by name in testimonials as welcoming or kind.
