The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is described as playing an important role in the community as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization, reaching hundreds of thousands of individuals each year through membership, programs and outreach activities. Community support from individuals and local partnerships provides program scholarships and free offerings, including opportunities for individuals to learn how to swim and be safe around the water, prevent and cope with chronic diseases, and build self-confidence and social skills. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA continues its partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of the “Patch With A Purpose” program.

Members have exclusive savings on Summer Camp and access to 23 Tampa Bay YMCAs. Each family center has a pool, some locations feature multiple pools, and all locations have new wellness equipment. The Tampa YMCA offers exclusive access to youth and family programs at YMCA Camp Cristina and the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center. The Y states that it is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life working side by side to strengthen communities, and that it works to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race or sexual orientation has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity. Core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Historically, the first YMCA facility in Tampa was built in 1889 as a 50,000-square-foot building that brought the city its first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool and included residential headquarters to provide housing for young men when they came to the city. The broader YMCA movement began in 1844 when George Williams sought to develop a wholesome place for young people during the Industrial Revolution, and by 1851 there were 24 Ys in Great Britain with a combined membership of 2,700, with the Y arriving in North America that same year. YMCAs are credited with sparking the invention of basketball and volleyball, contributing to the idea of night school, and contributing concepts for organizations including the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls.
