The YMCA describes its mission as putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Tampa YMCA focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility and is described as part of the largest and oldest service organization in America, serving over 17 million members in 120 countries. The Tampa Y is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization, and its history in Tampa dates back to 1889, when the first YMCA facility in the city brought Tampa its first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. The YMCA continues to reference values first established in 1844 and notes that the Y arrived in North America in 1851, with early locations in Montreal and Boston. The Tampa YMCA remains committed to providing free access to life-saving water safety education, and donations support swim instruction, chronic disease programs, and opportunities to build self-confidence and social skills. The organization partners with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA logo appears on all Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys as part of the “Patch With A Purpose” program. The Tampa YMCA notes that community support and local partnerships help provide program scholarships and free offerings for kids, adults, seniors, families, and cancer survivors. Members have unlimited access to 10 family centers and three wellness centers, exclusive access to youth and family programs at YMCA Camp Cristina and the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center, and exclusive savings on Summer Camp. Each family center has a pool, some locations have multiple pools, all locations have new wellness equipment, and members can plan workouts with a Certified Personal Trainer at the Y. Licensed Preschool services are offered for ages 2 years old to 5 years old at two family centers, and group and private swim lessons and water exploration classes are available for all ages from 6 months to adult.
