The Dance Academy of Stuart was founded in 1997 by Alicia Chodera. Since 1998, the Stuart City Dancers have been the studio’s company for serious young dancers ages 10 to 18, including community outreach performances. The program offers limited class sizes and performance opportunities throughout the year as part of its dance education. The academy’s logo features a dancer in an attitude pose that has remained the same for over 27 years.

Founder Alicia Chodera began ballet lessons in Chicago at Ellis Du Boulay School of Ballet, continued at the Boston Ballet in the 1980s, and later trained and worked in New York City, where her ballet technique background led into teaching and business leadership. The faculty is described as experienced, and students are exposed to several schools of ballet, including the Cecchetti Method, Vaganova, Royal Academy of Dance, The Cuban National Ballet, and Neo Classical Ballet/Balanchine. The mission of The Dance Academy of Stuart states that it is built on passion, inspiration, and the drive to enhance young lives, with a focus on a positive future in the performing arts from classical to contemporary styles, and a loving environment with a foundation of strong discipline. According to founder Alicia Chodera, “Each child is an individual with thoughts and emotions uniquely their own. My teaching staff and I approach every child as an individual.”
