Lutheran Services Florida (LSF) has, for more than 30 years, provided early childhood education, and the Tampa Childcare Food Program (CCFP) has operated since 1987. The Tampa CCFP operates in partnership with the Florida Department of Health and is funded by the USDA, and through this program nearly 400 licensed home daycare providers in Hillsborough County receive reimbursement for serving healthy meals and snacks to the children in their care. The Florida Department of Health recognized LSF’s work with a Commitment to Excellence award as part of CCFP Week. The website for LSF Head Start and Early Head Start is supported by Grant Numbers 04CH012886, 04CH012861, 04CH012802, 04CH011690, 04CH011190 and 04HP000259 from the Office of Head Start within the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program’s mission statement is that every child deserves the best start she or he can have, no matter their circumstances.
One parent, Loemys Rivera, describes being a Head Start child, later becoming a Head Start parent, and now a preschool teacher for Head Start, and shares that her children come home with stories about what they learned and how much they love their teachers. Another parent, Alysa Walston, states that Early Head Start and Head Start have been a “blessing and miracle” for her family since 2018 and notes her children are more confident and comfortable with learning and with others. Parent Irvin Solomon says he was glad to enroll his daughter in Head Start instead of daycare and that she “knows so much more.” Parent Katrina McGriff states that because of Head Start, her children were honor roll students when they started school and that it taught them how to be self-sufficient. Parent Pakethia Calvey says families should choose LSF Head Start because it not only provides childcare but also gives parents the chance to figure out what they want to achieve and who they want to be as parents, and that the benefits are not only for the kids.
