About

Design Camp includes hands-on projects such as building with LEGO bricks, using LEGO Spike robotics, and three dimensional design and sculpture. Campers take part in activities like designing future cities, reimagining Atlanta’s neighborhoods, and using LEGO bricks to imagine neighborhoods, stadiums, scoreboards, equipment, mascots, and sports-inspired worlds. They also work on environmental design by prototyping green buildings and renewable energy systems, and they design and build bridges, roads, city systems, and creative, efficient transit systems using LEGO Spike robotics.

Campers explore transportation by looking at cars, trains, planes, subways, bike lanes, airports, bridges, and futuristic vehicles, and they build moving models using LEGO bricks and LEGO Spike robotics. They also explore murals, installations, and public art, create hands-on projects like murals and models, and design and build vibrant, inclusive play areas and joyful play zones using crafting materials. Some sessions introduce topics such as Entrepreneurship 101 and Intro to Architecture, and campers explore parks, splash pads, skateparks, playgrounds, and imaginative public spaces.

Design Camp is offered by MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta), which was founded in 1989. MODA states that its mission is to empower people to design a better world and defines design as a creative force that can solve problems, transform lives, and make the world a better place. MODA describes itself as the only museum in the Southeast that is all about design and as the only museum in the Southeast devoted exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design. MODA states that it is making history rather than preserving it and that it practices radical friendliness.

MODA describes Design Camp as emphasizing hands-on creativity, real-world problem solving, teamwork and innovation, and designing a better world, and notes that campers engage in hands-on experiences that ignite imagination, inspire innovation, and build a better world. MODA states that it functions as a center for exchange, offering one-of-a-kind exhibitions and programs meant to inspire action and change in the community. MODA lists its leadership team as Laura Flusche – Executive Director; Susan Sanders – Development Director; Leslie Yarborough – Education; Felicia E. Gail – Public Programming & Membership; Kristen Routh – Marketing & Communications; Miranda Johnson – Visitor & Volunteer Experience; and Evelyn Stith – Private Events. Camp registration is open, and camp scholarships are available.
