About
Discovery Zone Kids offers hands-on fun and engaging activities that include Art & Craft, Music & Movement, Everyday Living, Language, literacy, math, science, art, music, physical development, and social concepts. Children take part in pretend playing and dress-up in classroom areas dedicated to everyday living, and they also have access to blocks, books for infants, and phonological awareness activities in large group, small group, and individual settings. The program uses the “Learn Everyday” curriculum for daycare children and the “We Can” curriculum for PreK children, and both are described as hands-on and supporting a “Learn and Play” philosophy.
• Ages: 0–12 years old
• Schedule: Daycare Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; tours available Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Discovery Zone Kids is registered in Georgia and opened in October 2014, and the program states that it has 11+ years of experience. The mission states that Discovery Zone Kids promotes early learning through hands-on fun and engaging activities, follows a “Play and Learn” philosophy, and lists keeping children safe and clean as a priority. The entire facility uses age-appropriate thematic activities, and age-appropriate structure is provided with teachable moments captured throughout the day, including ten fun-filled thematic units during summer camp.
Qualified, dedicated, and certified teachers along with teacher-aides provide foundations for children in language, literacy, math, science, art, music, physical development, and social concepts. For school-age children, the program offers homework help and additional help as needed during the school year. Meals are provided, and parents are communicated with regularly about planned activities throughout the year and updates about policies and procedures.
Each classroom has an area dedicated to everyday living where children spend time pretend playing, with dress-up clothes and items commonly found in a house. Youngest children are exposed to art several times a week, while preschoolers have daily art activities, and music is integrated into many lessons throughout the day with all age groups. Children move with music in class every day as they learn songs and build their vocabulary, and children are escorted in and out of the classroom and the facility and are supervised in the classroom and on the playground.
The Director/Owner, Jayshri Soni, has owned and operated a successful tutoring company focusing on supplemental education services under the No Child Left Behind Act for nine years. Before that, she was a certified science teacher in McCormick, South Carolina, and she holds a Master of Science degree along with a teaching certificate to teach all sciences. During her career, she has been nominated for the Presidential Award in Teaching of Math and Sciences and for Who’s Who of American Women, which featured her biography in the 2007–2008 edition.
One grandparent, Rhonda, describes the outside of the facility as lovely, notes that security and questioning of identity for pickup were appropriate and on point, and says the staff were sweet and eager to address questions. Rhonda also reports that the rooms were very clean, staff were clean, and hand sanitizer and Kleenex were readily available, and that the facility looked adequately prepared for each age. Another parent, Karlee Stower, states that all the teachers are friendly and really caring, that her daughter with anxiety was happy and engaging with other kids, and that the director, Ms. Soni, quickly addresses concerns and genuinely cares about the kids and parents; Karlee also notes that meals and snacks are included and says her family plans to return to the center.
Parent Jennifer Levine reports that her 4-year-old daughter has attended for over a year and that any issues were quickly resolved in a professional and caring manner, and she mentions that Melissa, who gave the tour, greeted other parents and children by name. Parent Stephanie Barger states that her family has been with Discovery Zone Kids for a year and a half, with a 3-year-old in full-time care and a 6-year-old in the before-and-after school program, and she describes all of the teachers as knowledgeable and attentive and says her family has not had incidents with staff or other children like at other centers.
