Forward Momentum Chicago Dance Programs offers dance programming and dance education through School Programs, Power UP! Classes, After School Matters, and the FMC Summer Dance Camp. The program includes classroom residencies and formal studio training as part of its dance experiences for different ability levels. Forward Momentum Chicago’s mission is to empower Chicagoland youth in schools and communities with limited arts access by utilizing dance to build lifelong skills that foster pathways to success. The organization was founded on the principle of providing dance education to children and communities with limited arts access and is committed to servicing schools in the city’s south and southwest neighborhoods and to ensuring access and equity to BIPoC communities. Its curriculum is developed around National Common Core Standards, National Arts Standards, and 21st Century Learning, and includes a strong component of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards and goals infused throughout instruction. Programs are built upon a foundation in 21st Century Learning Goals, National Common Core Standards, National Dance Standards, and Social Emotional Learning.
Forward Momentum Chicago brings professionally taught, affordable programs out of the studio into Chicago’s public schools and neighborhoods. It is described as Chicago’s Premier Dance Education Organization and offers a variety of dance experiences for all ages and ability levels. Forward Momentum Chicago is one of eight dance companies that are part of the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, selected for the history and impact of its work, including legacy, next-generation, and arts education dance companies. Forward Momentum Chicago is one of eight dance companies in the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, developed through a partnership between Logan Center Community Arts and the Joyce Foundation’s Culture Program, as well as leaders from each dance company.
Parent and student testimonials describe the staff as hard working and believing in the children, and describe the program as one of the best dance programs in the city where children learn a lot and participate in events throughout the city. One FMC graduate shares that the program helped increase teamwork and leadership skills and improved work ethic, and provided a healthy environment for self-expression and working with others. Parents of ASM students and Summer Dance Camp participants describe the staff and ASM teens as friendly, professional, helpful, and pleasant, and note that their children developed in the dance styles taught and were ready to return for future sessions.
