About
Lil Sluggers Chicago is a youth baseball program that focuses on basic baseball fundamentals such as throwing, fielding, hitting, catching, base running, sliding, T-Ball, and Coach-Pitch. The program also offers Saturday Lil League, Advanced Classes, Private Lessons, and Team Training, and groups kids into Rookies, Minor Leagues, and Major Leagues based on age and experience.
• Ages: 2–8 years old
• Schedule: Seasonal sessions including Spring Session 2 (April 20–June 13) and Summer Session (June 15–August 15), with multiple winter class options on weekdays and Saturdays
Lil Sluggers states that it is designed to prepare boys and girls ages 2 through 8 for their journey into organized team play by improving and developing their social and physical skills both on and off the field. Basic baseball fundamentals are described as the core of the curriculum, and the classes and coach-pitch instructional leagues are described as building confidence, reinforcing team play, teaching cooperation, and fostering a love for the game. The program describes its philosophy as “have FUN, build CONFIDENCE, and learn BASEBALL, in that order.” The program notes features such as an energetic pace of classes, small player-to-coach ratios, minimizing kids’ wait time between turns, kids rotating in small groups through multiple drill stations, and the use of age-appropriate drills and equipment at each level. Rookies are listed for ages 2 and 3, Minor Leagues for ages 4 and 5, and Major Leagues for ages 6 to 8. Advanced Classes are for players ages 6 to 8 who have completed several Lil Sluggers classes at the Rookie and Minor League levels and use real baseballs, bats, and gloves. T-Ball and Coach-Pitch instructional programs are described as designed to prepare kids for league play and “real” baseball game settings, and Saturday Lil League offers T-Ball for ages 4 and 5 and Coach-Pitch for ages 6 to 8, run like a real league with teams in full uniform. The program also notes that it is never too late to join the current session and that it offers classes, private lessons, and team training for ages 9 and up. The program states that it will provide updates as it receives them from the Chicago Park District.
