Summer Camp at The Revival features a celebration of classic “Chicago-style” improv for kids age 6 to 12, with each camp group rotating through morning and afternoon classes and having five classes in any given topic during the course of a week. Campers are divided into age-appropriate, co-ed groups, and each group is assigned a full-time counselor, with a team that includes counselors, instructors, assistants, and a camp leader, all with backgrounds in education and the arts. Senior Counselors hold at least a bachelor’s degree in arts-related fields, several hold master’s degrees, and Junior Counselors are current undergraduate students from Columbia College’s Performing Arts Department.

According to the program’s mission statement, Summer Camp at The Revival offers a way to jumpstart creativity, develop new skills and have fun, with a focus on collaboration, self-confidence, and a whole day without screens. The Revival describes improv as more than comedy and as a way of engaging with the world, emphasizing listening skills, a philosophy of collaboration, and a celebration of saying “Yes!” and states that it is rooted in Chicago’s rich cultural history. The Revival notes that this same spirit fuels every performance, class, and partnership and describes itself as “more than a theater.”

In 2015, The Revival returned improvisation to Chicago’s Historic South Side, and in the subsequent 60+ years, Chicago has become known as the “birthplace of improv.” Since then, The Revival has built a multi-purpose performing arts company that offers live performances, classes, and workshops to visitors from across the state, country, and beyond, and it was inspired by the history of improv in Chicago, which – next to jazz music – has been called “America’s other great contribution to the arts.”

Testimonials about The Revival include “Heavy hitters of comedy!” from the Chicago Sun-Times, a four-star rating and the word “Hilarious!” from the Chicago Tribune, and feedback from organizations such as Harris Associates and the Booth School of Business describing their workshops as taking Client Development teams to new heights and providing a great team-building experience.
