About

YMCA Youth Development Programs are part of the YMCA, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Depending on the local YMCA, youth may use facilities such as gyms, pools, youth gyms, fitness centers, climbing walls, computer labs, early childhood centers, teen centers, outdoor fields, running tracks, tennis courts, handball and racquetball courts, ice or roller skating rinks, skateboard parks, ropes challenge courses, multi-purpose rooms, libraries, saunas, whirlpools, family locker rooms, and weight rooms.

The YMCA was founded in London in 1844 and has grown into an organization with locations in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the United States. There are 2,597 Ys across the U.S., reaching people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and serving 18 million community members each year. Worldwide, the Y serves more than 64 million people in 120 countries. Each year, Y programs serve 2.4 million youths in food programs and 244,000 overnight camp participants. The YMCA focuses on three primary areas of impact: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, and its core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. YMCA of the USA is a national resource office, and every YMCA location is independently operated; YMCA of the USA does not have authority over local Ys’ business operations, membership and employment relationships, or contractual obligations.

In its community involvement, the Y collaborates with community leaders to bring healthy living within reach of people in the communities it serves. Through community programs, local outreach and global engagement, the Y provides support and inspires action in communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Y and the Walmart Foundation partnered to help provide food to children who need it most.
