Girls Who Code Clubs at Downers Grove Public Library introduces participants to basic computer science skills and computational thinking through discussion, hands-on activities, tech-based activities, and unplugged experiences. The clubs use the Girls Who Code book “Learn to Code and Change the World” by Reshma Saujani. The library offers two different clubs: one for girls in grade school and one for teens, and participation is completely free.
• Ages: 8–13 years old
• Schedule: Weekly Wednesday meetings in winter and early spring, with separate time slots for Grades 3–4 and Grades 5–8, plus required parent meetings and a graduation event

Girls Who Code is a national organization whose mission is to close the gender gap in the fields of science and technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. Downers Grove Public Library is proud to be a Girls Who Code Club site, and the clubs are run by library staff and local programmers. Space is limited, participants in the Grades 3–4 club must reside in Downers Grove or attend a Downers Grove school, applications for Grades 3–4 are accepted November 1–30, and applicants for Grades 5–8 are selected by lottery, with selected participants notified by December 10, 2025. Applicants for Grades 5–8 must be able to commit to attending club meetings every Wednesday evening from January 15 through April 8, 2026, with no class on April 1 for spring break, and selected candidates are required to attend an in-person introductory meeting with a parent or guardian on Wednesday, January 7 at 6 p.m., followed by a program graduation on Wednesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. Participants do not need a background in coding to sign up.
