Odyssey Summer Camp
SIUE STEM Center, Science East, Science East 1276, Room 1276, Edwardsville, IL 62026
About
Odyssey Summer Camp includes activities such as introducing scientific principles, exploring food webs, building math skills through games, and simple “crime scene” investigations. Campers also work on programming a variety of robotic systems and participate in model rocketry projects.
• Ages: 7–13 years old
The camp is organized by the STEM Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Every summer, the STEM Center organizes camps for students in grades 2–8 in a variety of topics, and camps are staggered so that students can choose subjects and friends or siblings close in age can be in the same class. The camp mixes academics with physical activities. The STEM Center works with talented teachers from the area as instructors for the camp.
The STEM Center’s leadership team includes Dr. Sharon Locke (Professor and Director), Dr. Charlie Blake (Assistant Research Professor), Liza Basden (Resource Center Manager), Dawn Olive (Office Manager), Emily Wonnacott-Stanley (Community Engagement Coordinator), and Dr. Henriette Burns (Adjunct Assistant Research Professor). The STEM Center provides a variety of programming and services to broaden STEM education throughout the region and maintains a STEM Resource Center with a library of materials for every grade level and STEM content area, including lesson plans, books, articles for professional development, and hands-on and demonstration materials such as discrepant events, models, and Vernier equipment. These items can be borrowed at no cost, and consumables can be purchased at cost. Registration for Odyssey generally opens in January and is available on Odyssey Science Camp through the Office of Online Education and Outreach.
