Steve & Kate’s Camp states that all year long kids are in rigid structure, and that in summer the camp gives them freedom to expand and evolve by letting campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long. The camp’s model was created to let kids be in charge of their choices and to let parents have flexible, refundable passes. Steve & Kate’s Camp has been operating in this way since 1980, and the camp director at this site is named Zach.

The camp offers summer day camps for kids aged 4–12, with a camp age limit of 13, and campers who turn 14 while attending may finish out the summer. Campers must be fully toilet trained, able to speak up for their needs, and able to get through the camp day without a nap. Steve & Kate’s Camp also offers mentorship programs for children aged 14 and 15, with availability that may vary by location, and no paperwork is required for age verification during registration.

Families can buy any number of day passes, send their child to camp on any day within the season, and receive automatic full refunds for any unused purchased Day Passes at the end of the camp season. Summer Pass refunds are available if not enough days are used to justify the cost, refunding the difference versus the daily rate. All-inclusive rates cover all camp hours from 8:00am to 6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child, and parents can drop off and pick up at any time within camp hours.

In the Media Lab, campers can explore film, coding, robotics, virtual reality, and interactive art apps, and coding uses carefully selected iPad apps for both early and advanced readers. Robotics uses leading-edge robotic technology, guided activities, self-directed games, robot landscapes, and custom mazes. The Tinker Lab includes arts and crafts, custom maker packs, and 3D pens, and the Sewing Salon uses both hand-sewing and machine sewing techniques. Stop-motion animation is done on custom-built animation stages, and the Gameroom & Lounge includes tabletop games, marble mazes, forts, sensory objects, and a bookshelf.

Sports & Rec may include a go-kart experience and classic sports, with options to make up new games. Weekly Specials may feature giant inflatables, musical performances, movement workshops, and popup petting zoos. Water play can include water tag, inflatable slip n’ slides, and giant sprinklers, subject to space, weather, and local water restrictions.

As summer approaches, registered families receive an email with a link to a virtual camp orientation that covers local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, what to bring and not bring, and additional camp details.

Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at the camp “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s.” Apple’s Hot News states that “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that many children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes the camp as combining a traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-focused approach. The Chicago Tribune states that “Working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
