The Youth Sports Programs follow the YMCA Youth Sports Philosophy, which is based on nine concepts: Participation, Fun, Fitness, Skills, Teamwork, Fair play, Family Involvement, Volunteers, and Character Development. Youth Basketball leagues teach kids the basics of the sport and include coaching with a focus on fair play, healthy competition, and parent participation. The Youth Dance program is open to all skill levels for kids ages 3–13, and participants learn fundamental techniques, choreography, and performance skills in a fun and supportive environment. YMCA T-ball teaches young baseball players the fundamentals of catching, throwing, and batting in a team atmosphere, and YMCA baseball includes T-ball, coach-pitch, and player-pitch formats. The YMCA Soccer Program is a progressive program with multiple age-specific levels and is committed to teaching sound fundamental skills, fair play, and positive competition in both indoor and outdoor soccer. Youth Volleyball at the Y focuses on learning to bump, set, and serve, and emphasizes values, sportsmanship, friendship, and fun. Youth Flag Football promotes fitness, teaches youngsters lessons about teamwork and fair play, and covers basic football skills such as running, receiving, and defending, with games played on Highland Community College fields located west of the YMCA building; Outdoor Soccer is also played on these fields. Group Exercise Classes are free with YMCA membership, and the Family Fun Zone became the newest addition to the Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois in 2019. The YMCA offers a variety of programming for the entire family, from infants to senior citizens.

The mission of the Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois has been serving community needs since 1869 and, as of 2019, has served the region for over 150 years. The organization is a charitable association of members working together to provide people in Northwest Illinois with leadership, programs, and services in a healthy environment promoting Christian values and personal growth in spirit, mind, and body. The YMCA strengthens the community by working with neighbors so everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive regardless of age, income, or background. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization supported by community partners and donors, and its Annual Campaign is the primary drive each year to sponsor families and individuals through subsidized memberships and programs. Community impact is supported through community investment, as the YMCA grants 100% of proceeds into the lives of people in the region so every person has the opportunity to pursue a healthy spirit, mind, and body. Financial assistance is awarded to applicants based on the available resources of the Association through a simple and confidential application process.

The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois and Highland Community College have a partnership in which the YMCA serves as the HCC Sports Complex, where all Highland Community College indoor sporting events and physical education courses are held. To honor this partnership, Highland Community College students receive discounted YMCA membership rates, and full-time Highland Community College students taking 12 or more credit hours receive free YMCA membership if started before the midterm of that semester. The YMCA is a proud Red Cross Training Site and provides American Red Cross classes.
