Mid-Illinois Gymnastics and Dance, Inc. was established in 1969 and is described as the oldest private gymnastics club in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. It is a USA Gymnastics Club with limited graded classes on Olympic specification equipment and professional, progressive, safety-oriented instruction. Students receive instruction on equipment such as a carpeted spring and foam floor, foam and solid pits, special mats, Tumbl-Trak, Rod Floor, balance beams, uneven bars, vault horses, trainer bars, pre-school play shapes, and in a hardwood floor dance room with a balcony overlooking the gym. Observation is available through windows, and the gym area displays gold stars that represent a State, Regional, or National Champion. A pro-shop on site offers leotards in bright prints and solids from Alpha Factor Aerials.
The program’s mission statement is “OUR MISSION: TO CHERISH YOUR CHILDREN,” with stated goals to teach physical fitness in a progressive and very safety-oriented atmosphere, to have each child enjoy and learn from the program at his or her own pace, and to teach as many gymnastics and dance skills as possible, including very high-level skills to gifted and appropriate students. The mission statement repeats that their mission is to cherish children.
The leadership team includes owner Larry N. Moehn; owner and director Louise Pope Moehn; and owner, head coach of all the tumbling and AA teams, and artistic director of Mid Illinois Dance, Kristin Moehn Bower. Staff credentials listed include advanced degrees and certifications such as USAG Elite Coach, USAG Safety and Skill Certified, USAG PDP Coaching, USTA Tumbling certified, USAG Skill Evaluator, NAWGJ Judge, and various academic degrees in physical education, nursing, education, legal studies, marketing, management, occupational therapy assistant, and physical therapy, as well as experience as a 1980 Olympic Trials contender and state, regional, and national champion.
Dress and safety rules state that after one lesson all girl gymnasts are required to wear a one-piece leotard of their choice with no tights, with optional bike or gym shorts over the leotard, and optional all white socks or footies that must be removed if they cause slipping. Boys are required to wear bike or gym shorts and a t-shirt tucked in. The program does not allow jewelry or chewing gum, requires hair to be secured away from faces, asks that clothing and personal items be kept to a minimum, and requires students to bring their own marked water, with no food or drink allowed in working areas or the lobby.
