About

Granite City Park District Youth Programs take place within a park setting that includes walking paths, gardens, and fountains. The programs are connected to facilities that include an ice rink, a swimming pool that opened in July 1994, and a sunken gardens area that was created from the original pool’s diving tower site. Families can use online registration, and a Spring/Summer brochure is available for download for these programs.

The Granite City Park District was created after a special election on February 19, 1921, with the first taxes collected that same year. Wilson Park opened to the public on June 1, 1923, and an additional 18 acres were added in 1926. The Park District’s first swimming pool was built in 1922 with a sand bottom, a new pool was completed in 1940 and used until 1992, and the latest pool opened in July 1994 next to the ice rink, which opened in 1967. The original pool’s diving tower area is now known as the sunken gardens, and a beautiful garden area in the park was developed in the mid‑1920s. Since 1921, the Park District has served as a cornerstone of activities for the community and offers walking paths, gardens, and fountains for community use. The first Superintendent of the Park District was Mr. Ernest Svieking.

The stated purpose of the Granite City Park District is to enhance the quality of life through the development of facilities and the offering of programs and recreation services, to preserve the environment through the conservation and protection of natural resources, and to provide leisure opportunities for the benefit of its citizens.
