Camp Discover includes classic camp activities such as swimming, lunch, and fun games. Campers take weekly field trips to places like the Ball Factory and Medieval Times. The program also offers specialty, educational, and sports camps, and includes a volunteer Leader In Training (LIT) program where participants assist counselors and help with tasks such as setting up and taking down activities, preparing and serving snacks, and assisting counselors during activities.

Each week at Camp Discover features a different theme, including “Strike Up the Fun,” “Curiosity Quests,” and “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead.” Campers enrolled in Specialty Camps still take part in the typical Camp Discover activities. Summer camp uses a rolling car line for morning drop-off from 6:30 am–8:30 am and afternoon pick-up from 4:00 pm–6:00 pm.

The YMCA’s Leader in Training (LIT) Program is open to registered summer day campers entering grades 7–9, and LITs gain hands-on experience by assisting camp counselors with younger campers. LIT selection is based on both an application and an interview, and LITs are expected to model the YMCA’s four core values of Honesty, Respect, Caring, and Responsibility. Teen volunteer opportunities are available for area high school students entering grades 9–12 to help during summer camp.

Families are asked to label all of their child’s belongings. Campers are expected to wear tennis shoes or sneakers with socks and weather-appropriate play clothes each day, and to pack items such as a swimsuit and towel, plastic bag for wet items, sunscreen, shower shoes, water bottle, lunch or snack if not eating provided meals, any required hygienic supplies, and a change of clothes. Items not allowed at camp include electronics, trading cards, toys or stuffed animals, and jewelry, makeup, or nail polish.

The YMCA states that its mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. For 130 years, the YMCA has served families in its community, and volunteers play a role in YMCA programs, including high school students helping during summer camp. The Camp Director and Assistant Youth Specialists hold degrees in education, business, or related fields and meet required DHS experience qualifications, and college-aged counselors often are pursuing degrees in child care, physical education, art, or related fields. The YMCA notes that no one is turned away due to inability to pay through Open Door Financial Assistance, and that scholarships and youth programs support youth who might otherwise miss out on summer camps, recreational leagues, or enrichment programs because of cost.
