About
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago offers free tutoring for children with dyslexia using one-on-one tutoring. The program also provides FREE training and Orton-Gillingham certification for tutors. The center holds an annual charity 5k walk/run to support its free services.
• Price: The Children’s Dyslexia Center teaches children to read and tutors to teach free of charge. It costs $6,000.00 per year to teach a child. The annual cost to support each student in our program is approximately $6,000 per year, which also includes the training for our tutors, and it is all provided at no cost.
Planning and fundraising for the center began in 1996, construction was completed in January 1999, the first Director was hired in May 1999, the first tutor training began in July 1999 with 2 trainees, and the first Summer Session began in July 1999 with 4 children. The center was founded in 1999, and the first center in Chicago was officially the 17th center to open nationwide. The Center Director is Erin Webb ([email protected]). The mission of the Children’s Dyslexia Center is to provide multi-sensory tutorial reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia and to train tutors in the Orton-Gillingham approach to multi-sensory teaching of reading, spelling, and writing. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago is a 501(c)3 non-profit and a 501(c) 3 registered charity dedicated to providing free tutoring to dyslexic children. The center operates from facilities provided free of charge by the Illinois Masonic Children’s Home and is able to operate free of overhead so that virtually 100% of donations are used to educate tutors and children. The program’s annual charity 5k walk/run is used to build teams, encourage corporate matching, and support its free services, and it is funded through the generosity of Scottish Rite Masons, volunteers, and donations, including support from the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago at 383 E Lake St, Bloomingdale, IL 60108. One parent testimonial describes a child named Nick whose experiences at the center are credited by his parent with changing his life and their family’s life, and several statements from the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago thank donors and use phrases such as “Your generous gift helps us help kids read and succeed,” “Help us unlock the magnificent potential of a child’s mind. We can’t lose another child, donate today,” and an extended tree metaphor encouraging supporters to “be-leaf in a student” and help the center thrive.
