The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago offers free tutoring for children with dyslexia using one-on-one tutoring. The program also provides tutor training and Orton-Gillingham certification, and it holds an annual charity 5k walk/run.
• Price: The annual cost to support each student in the program is approximately $6,000 per year, including tutor training, and it is all provided at no cost.
Planning and fundraising for the center began in 1996, construction was completed in January 1999, the first director was hired in May 1999, the first tutor training with 2 trainees began in July 1999, and the first Summer Session with 4 children also began in July 1999. The center was founded in 1999, and the first center in Chicago was the 17th center to open nationwide. The mission of the Children’s Dyslexia Center is to provide multi-sensory tutorial reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia and to train tutors in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. The program offers tutor free training and Orton-Gillingham certification. The leadership team includes Center Director Erin Webb and Center Director Cindy Kerchmar.
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to providing free tutoring to dyslexic children and offers free training and Orton-Gillingham certification for tutors. The center operates free of overhead so that virtually 100% of donations are used to educate tutors and children. The program is supported by the generosity of Scottish Rite Masons, volunteers, and donations, and it is connected with the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago. One parent testimonial describes a child who was diagnosed with dyslexia and Central Auditory Disorder and who attended the center after other attempts had failed, and the parent expresses lasting gratitude to the center and its supporters.
