About

Gateway Special Recreation Association (Gateway SRA) Programs and Summer Day Camp offers social clubs, summer camps, day trips, special events, and virtual recreation for people with disabilities. Participants can take part in activities such as arts and crafts, sports, service projects, swimming, field trips, therapeutic horseback riding, health and wellness activities like Tai Chi, basketball, softball, and Special Olympics Illinois.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Each summer, the eight-week day camp promotes healthy lifestyles for children and young adults ages 5 to 22.
• Price: Residents of Burr Ridge, Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Countryside, Pleasant Dale, Westchester, York Center, Hinsdale, and Willowbrook can participate at a resident rate. Participants outside the geographic areas participate at a non-resident rate.

Gateway SRA offers both year-round and seasonal activities, with options for one-on-one support, larger social clubs, and special outings and trips. Coaching is provided for those who want to compete in Special Olympics Illinois, and as part of Ray Graham Association (RGA), participants have the chance to enjoy therapeutic horseback riding. Programs are described as being as unique as the participants, and sports and fitness programs are described as improving heart health, strengthening muscles, and increasing flexibility. Social clubs are described as helping participants make new friends, deepen relationships, and feel a sense of belonging, and recreational activities are described as helping participants build new skills and feel accomplished.

Gateway SRA is part of Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities (RGA), which was founded in 1950 and states that it empowers those it serves and those who care for them to reach, grow, and achieve. Since 1997, the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL) has accredited the quality and consistency of RGA programs, and in 2023 RGA earned “Person-Centered Excellence Accreditation, with Distinction.” People with disabilities serve on the Board of Directors, RGA Council, and various other committees. RGA advocates with Illinois legislators for a fairly compensated direct support workforce and shares innovative practices with other providers through the Illinois Self Advocacy Alliance.

Certified therapeutic and recreation professionals staff the programs and are described as improving participants’ physical, social, and emotional well-being. The leadership team includes Kim Zoeller, President & CEO. One participant, Holt, states, “Gateway has been a game-changer for me. I love playing sports and going to parties! I'm glad I found a place that I fit in great.”
