The Mahomet Area Youth Club (MAYC) is a not-for-profit youth club that serves members in grades Kindergarten to freshman in high school and their families. The After the Bell Afterschool Program is a flagship initiative of the Mahomet Area Youth Club, and enrollment to become a MAYC member is always open to students age 6–18 years old. The organization reports supporting over 300 youth each year and working to improve attendance, grades, behavior, and school engagement, with reported outcomes that include a 65% increase in school attendance, 225 scholarships granted, 15,000 snacks provided, and 300 youth supported.
The Mahomet Area Youth Club was established in 1994 as a satellite unit of the Don Moyers Boys and Girls Club, and in 2003 it became a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. In 2013, MAYC began looking for ways to increase membership and create after school programming, and in 2017 the clubhouse was relocated to a new site in Mahomet. School administration, MAYC board members, and district parents worked together to create after-school enrichment classes, and community and business support played a role in helping the club relocate. In the community, 20–25% of kids qualify for free and reduced lunch, and 50–65% of the kids that attend the summer programs receive scholarships, with funding for scholarships provided by MAYC.
The Mahomet Area Youth Club states that its mission is to empower youth through enriching and educational experiences that promote personal growth, leadership, and community involvement, and to offer a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. The organization describes offering low- or no-cost programs for families based on household income, an afterschool program called After the Bell, a program called B.L.A.S.T. created to fit the needs of students and families regardless of economic or academic standing, summer programs for children and teens, and programming during the colder months.
