The Naperville Art League is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization sponsored by membership and dedicated to promoting and supporting the visual arts and encouraging artists within the community. Its Fine Art Center and Gallery is open to the public and hosts monthly themed art shows featuring original artwork created by members, with all pieces for sale. The organization offers a referral service for community residents seeking to commission original art by league members and refers artists to do demonstrations or art instruction outside of regular classes. Membership is open to artists, students, and people who enjoy and appreciate the arts, and members are encouraged to support at least one Naperville Art League activity during the year, such as the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, the Annual Holiday Show, the Annual Auction, and other events. Handicap parking is available at the rear of the building, and nearby city sidewalks are ramped. The Naperville Art League does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, age, disability, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
The Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery/Naperville Art League was founded in 1961 under the leadership of Hayman Herndon. In the mid-1970s the organization purchased a building in central Naperville, and the existing building was expanded in 1996. In 1984, the organization commissioned the 15-foot-high red sculpture “Landforms” on the city’s Riverwalk and began to foster the development of public art in the area. In 1985, the Naperville Art League founded the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, an outdoor art fair that draws thousands of festival goers to downtown Naperville on the third weekend of every September and has earned a reputation as one of the top outdoor art fairs in the country. In 2009, the Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery became part of the Century Walk public art project with the addition of the World’s Greatest Artist mural, designed by Mike Venezia and painted by Marianne Lisson Kuhn. The organization also supports the Century Walk public art project more broadly.
The mission of the Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery/Naperville Art League is to support and sustain development and diversity of all forms of art. Through art instruction, programs, workshops, and exhibits, it provides art education and raises awareness and appreciation of the arts for the cultural enhancement of the community.
The leadership team includes President Sally Sharp; Director of Exhibits Rose Calkins; Director of Education Lynne Kornecki; Director of Development Beata Nowak; Director of Marketing & Communication Jeri Davis; Director of Member Services Jennifer Hauser; Director of Programs & Hospitality Olivia Warro; Director of Building & Grounds Dan McCullough; Treasurer Linda Vander Kolk; Board Member at Large Debbie Venezia; and Riverwalk Fine Art Fair Executive Director Debbie Venezia.
