The Northfield Park District was established by referendum in 1957 as a special purpose unit of government as provided by the Illinois Park District Code, and it was started in 1957 by Jim Clarkson. From April 1998 to the present, the Park District has been housed at the Northfield Community Center. An elected Board of Park Commissioners consisting of seven members serves as the governing board of the Park District, and commissioners are elected to four-year terms and serve without compensation.
The mission of the Northfield Park District is to serve residents by supervising the usage and maintenance of park resources and offering facilities, programs, and activities designed to meet the leisure and recreational needs of residents. The Community Center was built with the cooperation of Northfield Park District, School District 29, and the Village of Northfield, and through this arrangement each entity has first priority of the others’ facilities when not in use. The Park District lists Northfield Park District Partners, NSSRA / Disability Services, and Park Partners as community partners.
