About

ArtReach Educational Theatre offers activities in acting, improvisation, singing, music reading, dance, hip-hop, creative writing, stage combat, set design, prop making, swimming, sporting activities, and exploring nature trails. All participants take part in structured learning activities taught both indoors and outdoors, and all workshops and performing arts camps conclude with a fully staged theatrical production. Each summer, the six-week day camp produces “Storybook Shows” that combine standard storybook tales with music and dance, and the three-week day camp features one-act plays with acting, plus song and dance numbers choreographed as openers and closers of each act.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m., with pre-summer, six-week early summer, and three-week late summer sessions, plus an After Care Program from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

ArtReach Educational Theatre states its mission as “Giving children a voice, as performers and as individuals.” Workshops are offered at various experience levels, from beginner through advanced, and are taught in age breakdowns for children and teens. The program accepts any child with a genuine interest in the arts from age 6 through high school and welcomes all children and teens ages 5 through 18. There is at least one instructor for every ten enrollees.

Many ArtReach instructors spent many years performing professionally and now teach children, and many are Board of Illinois Certified Teachers. The workshops are taught by Illinois Board of Education Certified Theatre Teachers and professional actor–singer–dancers, along with visiting professional Chicago-area casting directors and producers. ArtReach instructors are described as professionally trained performers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and numerous visiting artists come in on a daily basis to teach arts seminars. In addition to educational workshops and performing experience, children are provided with information to pursue professional paid opportunities in theatre, television, print work, and films, along with guidance from industry professionals who have worked in these areas.

Children enrolled in the camp are given the opportunity to swim, engage in sporting activities, and explore nature trails. A refrigerator is provided each day for campers to store their lunches, and children need to bring a lunch every day. Morning care services are available upon special request, based on interest, and a teen night program culminates in a fully staged Broadway-type musical. All participants have the chance to show their skills in a staged theatrical production.

Parent and student comments describe experiences with ArtReach Educational Theatre, including a student who wrote that they “loved learning” at ArtReach and planned to return, and another student who thanked the program for help “along the way.” One parent wrote that it “amazes” them how much their child has grown over the last few years and connected that growth to ArtReach and the people met there, and another parent stated that their child “has loved every minute” of the program and expressed that the dedication to the program and the kids is “amazing.”
