South Elgin Budokan Martial Arts is described as a unique facility with multiple skilled instructors and a greater diversity of disciplines than other dojos. Instructors are described as talented and as experts in their areas of instruction. The flagship Bujutsu (“Martial Way”) program is a dynamic style that was established in the 1960s and is a distinct blend of contributions from modern and traditional disciplines. The stated mission is that practicing martial arts provides a productive venue for students of all ages to build excellent character and self-esteem while learning an art that teaches respect, responsibility, discipline, and self-control.
South Elgin Budokan Martial Arts has been recognized in the Kane County Reader’s Choice awards as one of the best martial arts schools in Kane County in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Students come from South Elgin and many nearby Fox Valley communities, including Elgin, Bartlett, St. Charles, Geneva, Pingree Grove, Huntley, Streamwood, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Sleepy Hollow, Schaumburg, Wayne, Plato Center, Batavia, Hampshire, Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, West Chicago, Carpentersville, Wasco, and Campton Hills. One testimonial from Thomas O’Shaughnessy encourages students in any art, style, or program at the Budokan to practice frequently and to return to the basics so that techniques become better, stronger, and more natural over time.
